SQUINT IN CHILDREN

Squint is a very common condition . In children squint can be due to
tumor retinoblastoma. So every case of squint in children should be
reffered to ophthalmologist immediately...
1) congenital squint:
Mostly esotropia. It can be essential without
any pathology or any other factors affecting binocular single vision.
2)secondary squint:
Squint specially esotropia in children may be a
manifestation of
..complete ptosis
..congenital cataract
..retinal detachment
.. retinoblastoma
3) Accomodative squint
High hypermetropia(long sightedness) can lead to
esotropia.
Approach to squint in children:
A thorough eye examination should be carried ..
¡)visual acquity : as already mentioned hypermetropia can cause squint
¡¡)squint evaluation: corneal light reflex, cover test,
cover-uncover test, alternate cover
test.
¡¡¡) External eye examination(with torch light):
Complete ptosis, corneal opacity , congenital cataract.
¡v)with ophthalmoscope and slit lamp: retinoblastoma can be diagnosed
Treatment:
¡)Refractive error should be corrected
¡¡) congenital cataract treated by lens extraction and
secondary implantation of lens
¡¡¡)retinoblastoma should be managed immediately by enucleation
